Choosing the right jazz shoe for you

Regardless of whether you’re a beginner, or a seasoned jazz dancer, we have a shoe for your needs. We provide kids, as well as women’s and men's dance shoes. Jazz shoes come in boot, sneaker, and slip-on form. However, when looking for the perfect jazz shoe, key considerations to be made include the cut, the sole and the material of the shoe.

The cut

High cut jazz shoes are most commonly used by lyrical and folk dancers and are roughly ankle-length in height. In contrast, low cut shoes are more appropriate for contemporary dancers. They are the iconic black jazz shoes one would think of when picturing a jazz dancer, often also used as training shoes for beginners. Each cut has the option of lacing, however most novice dancers opt for slip ons due to their practicality.

The sole

Similar to ballet shoes, jazz shoes can be full sole or split sole. A full sole works your foot, encouraging muscle strength, and is therefore an appropriate shoe for beginner dancers. In contrast, split sole jazz shoes provide an extra degree of flexibility due to their split nature. They should be reserved for more advanced and experienced dancers.

The material

Mino Dance’s jazz shoes are most commonly made from durable leather on the outer side, with the inner material being cotton lined for sweat absorption and foam padded for arch support. Available in black and tan, you may choose to pair one of our dance accessories with your pair of jazz shoes.
